Club updates

Dear Paddler

Well February is looking very wet and windy at the moment so the club has taken the decision to Cancel the Saturday morning session this week, due to the exceedingly high winds that are being forecast.

Please note that the NWSC is closed on Friday and may be closed Saturday if high winds persist.  The course may also still be out of use, if the river levels remain very high.

It is not often that we take the decision to cancel the sessions but the extreme weather over the next couple of days suggests that this is a sensible option.  Anyone who had booked for sessions will be refunded.

Raft racing taster session for 14-16 year olds
We also have an opportunity for 14-16 year olds to join in a raft racing taster day on the 13th March. This is a full day event from 9am-4pm, with the aim of starting an U19 rafting team to compete in international races over the coming years. Should paddlers enjoy this session, they will need to be available on Friday evenings (from 5:30) to take part in some team training sessions. Places are just £15 for the day and are available through the booking portal.  You don’t need to be a paddler or competent on WW to come and take up this exciting aspect of the sport.

Litter Picks
Our monthly club litter picks are back for 2022. Continuing on the first Sunday of every month (other than July), we will be changing locations month on month to help clear up as much of our local waterways as possible.
Our first event will be on the 6th March, from 10-1, on the Grantham canal. We will be meeting in the car park of the Gamston Morrisons (furthest corner from the car park entrance) and accessing the canal from there.
Given the nature of this stretch of water, this event will be open to kayaks and SUPs only, if you are comfortable on a SUP on your knees you are welcome to join. We have limited club boards available, so we will close bookings as soon as we have filled the boards. Should you wish to bring a kayak, you must be able to transport it to the get-on yourself.
There is also the opportunity for non-paddling family and friends to attend and help us clear the litter on the bankside.

Future Litter Picks
  • 3rd April – Nottinghamshire Canal through the city centre (Starting away from the club)
  • 1st May – River Trent
  • 5th June – Nottinghamshire Canal
  • 10th July (due to the Freestyle World Championships we have moved this to the 2nd Sunday) – River Trent
  • 7th August – River Trent
  • 4th September – TBC
  • 2nd October – TBC

These will all be 10-1, with exact locations to be decided. All future events will have raft support, so non-paddlers / those not confident in their own craft or anyone who fancies a go in one is welcome to jump on.

All events are open to anyone, however to go in a raft participants must be 14+. Any one who wishes to go in their own craft, must be competent and able to self rescue if required. All those under 14 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Places are now available to book on EOLA and via our club website and remember that the events are free for all club members.

Pool Sessions
The next batch of pool sessions will be released at 8pm on Tuesday the 22nd of Feb.

We look forward to seeing you out and about at club events and stay safe in the bad weather.

Kind regards
Dawn
